Mark has been a member of the Victorian Race Walking Club since the
late 1970s when he first joined as a junior member. His history with
the club includes many milestones which include
- Over 20 years of continuous club membership
- Former club captain
- Committee member for over 10 years
- Club Handicapper (since 1984)
- Club Coach
- Person who produces the racing season calendar each year
At the moment he fulfils the following positions on the VRWC Committee
- Senior Vice President
- Handicapper
- Team Selector
- Club Coach
Apart from the many administrative tasks Mark has done for the club
over many years, he has also been an active competitor and has
represented VRWC, Victoria and Australia in racewalking competitions on
many occasions.
He has represented Australia at 4 World Walking Cup events as
follows
- 1987 New York 50 km Event 64th 4:29:49
- 1989 Barcelona 50 km Event 73rd 4:37:19
- 1993 Monterey 20 km Event 58th 1:35:06
- 1995 Beijing 50 km Event DNF
He has now moved into the Veteran ranks and has medalled at the last 2
World Veterans Championships.
At the WAVA Championships in England in 1999, he gained 2 silver
medals in the 40-44 age group
- 5000m Track Walk 21:56.45 2nd
- 20 km Road Walk 1:37:44.00 2nd
and at the WAVA Championships in Brisbane in July 2001, he gained a
further 2 silver medals in the same age group
- 5000m Track Walk 22:34 2nd
- 20 km Road Walk 1:40:43 2nd
He has also been active on a number of fronts on the Australian race
walking scene. These include
- A stint as secretary of the Australian Federation of Race
Walking Clubs
- Membership of the AA Racewalking Commission
- AV Selector
- AV Schools Committee membership
He is also heavily involved in school sport and regularly helps
organise various inter-school sporting competitions.
Mark continues to contribute to race walking at all levels with an
enthusiasm that shows no signs of slowing. His life membership awarded
this year is well deserved.
